Welcome

The Geosciences department trains students to understand and appreciate complex Earth systems. From the tectonic forces that build mountains and move continents, to the dynamics of glaciers and oceans that drive – and are driven by – global climate, to the evolutionary record of fossils trapped in ancient sedimentary rocks, our faculty and students engage in rigorous scientific study of the planet we call home.

Our department is a small, close-knit community. Students, faculty and staff work closely together in the classroom, in the research lab, and on field trips. We socialize during department cookouts. Our Geoscience Student Advisory Committee is active in assisting and mentoring younger students and organizing geos-themed movie nights and ice cream socials. Graduates leave Williams for a wide range of careers, including environmental consulting, hydrology, hazard assessment, the energy and  mining industries, outdoor education, and teaching and research in universities, colleges, and secondary schools.
