WILLIAMS GEOSCIENCES BICENTENNIAL AND A FAREWELL TO CLARK HALL
In 1817 Prof Amos Eaton (Williams Class of 1799, who later founded RPI) began the teaching of Geology at Williams, only the fifth college in the U.S. to do so. One year from now, as Reunion Weekend 2017 closes, the Geosciences
department will commemorate the BICENTENNIAL of that beginning with a 3-day/2 night event (June 11-13, Sunday afternoon through Tuesday noon), and we hope many of you will join us! (Some of you will already be here!)
We will also use the occasion to begin a protracted farewell to Clark Hall, which the department will leave in 2020 for a new home in a Science Center that will replace Bronfman. All of you “grew up” geologically in Clark; nostalgia will abound.
Our model for the festivities is still evolving, but will include hikes and field trips, a cookout and a more formal dinner, and indoor sessions on the history of the department, our current facilities and research and a look into its future….perhaps aided by alumni perspectives from the vantage points of your careers. And it will be a grand reunion, whether or not your class year ends in a ‘7 or a ‘2.
Right now we’d like to assess how many of you might want to be part of this event so that we can give college housing an idea of how many spaces we might need. We will also set aside blocks in some of the local motels, which aren’t too busy in mid-June. Please respond to this invitation by e-mail to the Geosciences Department Administrative Assistant (pacosta@williams.edu) as soon as you can decide, providing the following:
Name and class:
Number in party (families welcome!):
Room preference: dorm
motel
single/double
Comments:
(If you think you’ll be here and want to have a role…lead a hike, be a panelist, etc…let us know!)
When we have an idea of numbers, we will send information on pricing; watch the GEOS home page (geosciences.stage.williams.edu) and/or Facebook page for further details!
